State Republican Chair Announces He Will Not Run For Second Term

Derek Brown, the chair of the Utah GOP, announced on Tuesday that he will not seek reelection. In a statement, Brown wrote that while he had been encouraged by many people to run for another term, he and his wife Emilie decided the best way to meet their family’s needs was for him to conclude his service.  In the statement, Brown identified several of what he considered to be the most significant party achievements that happened during his service, including lifting the party out of crushing debt and holding a virtual convention during the pandemic.  Brown wrote that he plans to extend the same support he has received to whoever is the next party chair.

Grant Program Aims To Assist Idaho Communities of All Sizes

The program provides funds for projects that can be produced quickly and make cities and communities more livable for people of all ages, which includes creating vibrant public spaces, increasing transportation options or, this year, supporting local recovery from the pandemic. Randall Simon, director of communications for AARP Idaho, said the grant process is simple, in order to encourage communities of all sizes to apply. This isn t a long, drawn-out process, Simon explained. This goes in, fixes a problem, supports a community and is done in a matter of months instead of years.

Practices Of Anti-Human Trafficking Group May Actually Increase Demand, According To Vice Report

A report from Vice this week stated that practices of the anti-human trafficking group with ties to Utah, Operation Underground Railroad, may actually increase demand for child trafficking.  According to the report, the organization’s founder, Tim Ballard, and the people recruited to go on rescue missions often do not have the skills and experience the organization says they have. And while Ballard has said that his organization works with local law enforcement and other organizations, representatives from such groups in places like Thailand told Vice they haven’t interacted with the group.  This is the second piece in the past year from Vice examining concerns with the work of Operation Underground Railroad and comes as the group is under ongoing investigation by the Davis County attorney general. People familiar with the investigation say it is for misleading statements in its fundraising appeals.
