Chick-fil-A employees A’nya Strazdins, at left, and Brittany Ottarson were each awarded $2,500 scholarships by the company to further their education after high school. Strazdins plans to study nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University after graduating from Gloucester High School this spring. Ottarson plans to begin the Rappahannock Community College nursing program this fall after her graduation from Mathews High School. The Mathews County School Board honored some of its best classroom professionals this year, presenting Teacher of the Year gift baskets to Patrick Billups (Elementary School in Mathews), Jason Williams (Thomas Hunter Middle School) and Randy Applegate (Mathews High School). The three received gift baskets filled with gifts from a number of community businesses and individuals. The Mathews County School Board is expected to vote next month on a new name for the county’s elementary school.Board chairman John Priest indicated that the matter will be taken up at the May 18 meeting in response to a question posed by Mary Sampson of Foster during the public comment period at the start of Tuesday’s monthly meeting, which was held in the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School.

Frank Crittenden founded Chimney Corner on April 1, 1961 and is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the business.
Frank Crittenden and the staff at Chimney Corner Lawnmower, Inc., are in the midst of celebrating 60 years of business.Crittenden founded the business on April 1, 1961 and for a time he was its only employee. Now, Chimney Corner has 15 employees and services five counties and the Hampton Roads area.
Crittenden said that when he opened Chimney Corner, he was also the shop teacher at Mathews High School. He worked both jobs until 1980, when he decided to commit all his time to his growing business.

COVID-19 again cancels the Mathews County Independence Day fireworks show at Mathews High School. Mathews Fireworks Committee spokesman Jeremy Elliott tells the Gazette Journal that it was a tough decision because residents have expressed a need for something to look forward to and a desire to bring back the time-honored tradition but the uncertainty from new strains of the coronavirus made it difficult to move forward.
