Research: Youth Contraceptive Programming Amidst Cultural Complexity : PSI

Posted April 12, 2021 Impact Area Adolescents & Youth In northern Nigeria, religious and cultural norms define girls’ health and wellbeing, within and beyond their homes. Through programs like A360’s Matasa Matan Arewa (MMA), our flagship adolescent contraceptive project in northern Nigeria, we aim to account for the contextual forces that influence girls’ abilities to take charge of their lives. But are we getting it right? New independent research from Nigerian NGO, the Centre for Girls’ Education (CGE), assesses how we’re navigating the cultural complexity. By analyzing girls’ experiences with MMA’s girl-centered contraceptive programming, CGE explores how gender dynamics influence contraceptive decision-making among married girls in northern Nigeria’s conservative settings – and the areas in which we are, and we aren’t effectively responding.
