Recognizing the racism we likely harbor inside | News, Sports, Jobs

Lifestyles Correspondent NIAGARA, Wis. I have belonged to a book club since 2010; I joined one year after the group began and while I was still working. There are eight of us who meet once each month for eight months of the year. We call ourselves the Three B’s, which stands for Books, Brains and Bifocals we are all “of a certain age.” While we all share a love of books, enjoy discussing them and now are mostly retired, we come from different backgrounds and have had a variety of life experiences. We all bring different perspectives to our discussions.

Living the length and width of our lives | News, Sports, Jobs

Lifestyles Correspondent NIAGARA, Wis. A friend of mine recently posted on her Facebook page the following quotation by Diane Ackerman, “I don’t want to get to the end of my life and find I lived just the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well.” The more I thought about that phrase, the more I liked it, so today I want to delve into its meaning and ponder how we can all go about living long and wide. Bad habits and the need for New Year s resolutions | News, Sports, Jobs

Lifestyles Correspondent NIAGARA, Wis. It occurred to me today that I am halfway through my fifth year of retirement; I retired on May 31, 2016, which was 28 years from the very day I had begun my career at the hospital. My hiring had been the best birthday gift I could have ever asked for, and by the time I retired, I felt the same way. So, obviously the timing was right on both ends of the spectrum. While I was working, the nature of my job kept me on track. It required me to set a schedule, meet multiple weekly deadlines, keep appointments, and push myself to set and reach new goals every year. The biggest challenge was the sheer volume of work. Thankfully, I was a very organized person who thrived on a routine and a schedule, so I was able to meet what may have seemed like a fairly stringent set of job requirements.
