It’s coming up to two years since the dreadful final season of Game of Thrones: six episodes of such escalating awfulness they obliterated the entire culture of fandom that the series had accumulated.
In the intervening spell, American network HBO has made various attempts to breathe fresh life into the Thrones brand. A prequel show starring Naomi Watts and written by Jane Goldman was announced and then binned; a second prequel, featuring lots and lots of dragons, is in development. But now comes arguably the first genuine ray of optimism in this sorry saga: according to Variety, HBO is planning an adaptation of George RR Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories.
