World War II veteran Guy Atkinson honored at special dinner

Guy Atkinson was one of seven brothers who served in the military, five in World War II, two in the Korean War. The 98-year-old WWII veteran was surprised and “somewhat embarrassed” at the honor bestowed upon him during a recent dinner outing.

Massillon, Brookfield, North Lawrence, and East Greenville fielded more than 60 semi-professional teams a century ago.   HIGHLIGHTS Teams played sporadic schedules; players jumped from one team to another. They were former high school or college stars, local businessmen, and farmers. Top squads contested powerhouses from Akron, Cleveland, and Columbus. Aggressive managers lured legendary out-of-state standouts. Knute Rockne was the most famous football figure recruited by the Tigers.
