Stark County districts cancel classes, go remote ahead of COVID vaccine

The Independent As Stark County school districts prepare to get the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, many districts have announced plans to cancel classes or temporarily move to online learning. Officials fear staff members could experience side effects, prompting them to call off and leave schools without the necessary staff to conduct a school day. Massillon City Schools released its plan last week. Staff at Washington High School, the administrative office including preschool staff and transportation employees, are set to get their second dose on March 1 from the Massillon City Health Department. Massillon students will have classes March 1 but all students will move to remote learning the rest of the week. Throughout the month, individual school buildings will move to remote learning after building staff gets their second dose.

Stark County schools monitor coronavirus vaccine side effects

The Independent As more teachers and school employees receive the COVID-19 vaccine, Stark County schools are on alert for possible side effects. The Massillon City School District has canceled in-person classes on the day after employees in the school building get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The students will instead learn remotely. Superintendent Paul Salvino decision to move to remote learning is a proactive step. I don t have a desire to have to call off school due to a lack of staff and our parents, students and staff not having an opportunity to be prepared, he explained. We have a very sound remote learning plan that our administration and teachers have worked so productively and together on and I am extremely confident in our ability to serve our students remotely when needed.

Massillon City School employees get first dose of COVID-19 vaccine

The Independent MASSILLON  Brian Sifferlin didn t hesitate when Massillon City Schools officials asked if he wanted the COVID-19 vaccine.  He was the first staff member at Washington High School to get the shot on Monday. The city Health Department provided 130 doses to high school employees and another 30 to staff at the administrative building. Earlier next week, the agency will vaccinate about 180 staff members at the district s three elementary schools as well as at St. Mary and St. Barbara catholic schools and Massillon Christian School. They will vaccinate about 200 staff members at the Massillon Intermediate and Junior High Schools and R.G. Drage Career Technical Center later that week.
