Trusted Messengers On a chilly Sunday afternoon outside the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, Rachael Williams greeted passersby with an offering of free masks, hand sanitizer and, if needed, baby food. The care packages served as an ice breaker so she could strike up a conversation with the person about getting vaccinated. “Sometimes people get a little scared or apprehensive because they think that this vaccine was rolled out overnight, Williams told GBH News. But it wasn’t. It went through the same proper channels. It has been vetted, and it is safe,” . Williams, a senior research coordinator at Massachusetts General Hospital who is African American, is considered a trusted messenger — a culturally competent person who volunteers to spread the word in communities less likely to get the vaccine.

Team effort results in new vaccination site at Florian Hall

Harbor Health photo Florian Hall, the firefighter’s union headquarters on Hallet Street, is familiar to generations of Dorchester people as a gathering place for family functions and neighborhood benefit “times.” This week, the Neponset landmark has been converted into a Covid-19 vaccination site, the first of its kind in this section of the neighborhood. It was stood-up under the guidance of the medical professionals from Harbor Health, which operates the nearby Neponset Daniel Driscoll Community Health Center, one of Dorchester’s critically important neighborhood medical facilities. The clinic is getting logistical and staffing support from members of the National Guard’s 972nd Military Police Company in Reading and the state’s Medical Unit from Hanscom Air Base in Bedford.
