where we were in 2020, what tools we have and what knowledge we have and the status of hospitals and the hospital capacity, i think the public health measures can be dialed back because they were in place to prevent hospitals from getting overrun and to increase capacity, and that s what we should not see anymore, and hopefully we are on a good trajectory and i think the public health measures should reflect that. the cdc is expected to update its mask guidance as early as wednesday, and it s taking a while for the agency to do this. what do you make of that? the agency will lag what is going on with the real world, and we have seen that in much of the guidance where people came to about the science. what metrics make sense.

here with me now, dr. abdul elsayed. cnn contributor and former health contributor of the city of detroit. so nice to have you this morning. they re talking about changing this mask guidance. i wonder for you, so many states have already gone and jumped ahead of them on this. is anyone listening right now to the cdc? that s the hard part. over the course of this pandemic the cdc has said and done things that has sometimes shaken the public s trust. now that they seem so like they re singing from a different himalaya hymn book. it seems as though folks are not listening. what the cdc is trying to get here is there s a difference between recommendation and requirement. while the states have dropped their requirements, there are recommendations and they continue to recommend to folks where they re feeling sick and the virus is not gone. there still is a recommendation
