MINISTER For Finance and Planning, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba yesterday advised the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, to actively manage the livestock sector by devising various ways that will increase productivity in the sector.
The minister gave the advice in Dodoma, where he met and held talks with the ministry’s officials and those from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, to discuss various issues related to how to improve the livestock sector so that it can increase the country s economic growth and human development.

Govt launches milk drinking plan for all public servants
THE government has unveiled a plan for milk drinking by public servants aimed at mobilising drinking of locally produced milk, as well as increasing livestock keepers’ incomes.
Unveiling the plan here on Tuesday, Livestock and Fisheries minister Mashimba Ndaki said the implementation of the plan will help in solving the market challenges for milk and benefit livestock keepers.
The minister said 3 billion litres of milk is produced by the country’s livestock keepers per year, but the quantity of milk that is processed is only 74.3 million litres making much milk lack reliable markets, a very unsatisfactory situation for the country’s dairy industry.

THE government will ensure that the fishing industry produces a large number of fish especially those found in natural water sources, a senior official said yesterday.

Livestock and Fisheries Minister Mashimba Ndaki made the remarks shortly after inspecting activities carried out at Morogoro-based Kingolwira Aquaculture Center (KAC).
According to Ndaki, the fisheries industry has been very responsive at the moment due to the growing demand for its market.
He said the ministry will ensure that it continues to improve the production facilities for fish fingerlings and further expand the scope of its production to keep pace with the needs of fingerlings for fish farmers.

Pig farmers, dealers appeal for more action as trade ban bites
A WEEK after the government banned trade in pigs and consumption of pork in six Lake Zone districts following an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, farmers and dealers here have appealed for enhanced government action to contain the disease so that they can resume business.
They made the call yesterday at a meeting convened by the Director of Livestock Services, Prof Hezron Nonga, who visited Kahama the most affected district to provide support to a team of experts tasked with supervising effectiveness of measures taken to stop the spread of the disease.
