“It’s not CAAMFest without H.P. Mendoza involved in some way,” says CAAMFest Festival and Exhibitions Director Masashi Niwano.
Mendoza made his first indelible impression on movie fans in 2006 when “Colma: The Musical,” the Richard Wong film for which Mendoza wrote the screenplay and songs and acted, made its world premiere at what was then the San Francisco International Film Festival (now CAAMFest). Since then, the filmmaker, musician, composer, actor and writer has been a regular participant at the annual event.

On this edition of Your Call, we’re discussing this year’s Center for Asian American Media Film Festival (CAAMFest), which runs today through May 23. This year’s festival features over 50 events, including screenings, panels, and live performances. This is an especially important year given the rise of anti-Asian violence throughout the pandemic.
We ll discuss this year s highlights, including
Manzanar, Diverted: When Water Becomes Dust, a beautiful documentary that weaves together memories of intergenerational women. Native Americans, Japanese American World War II incarcerees, and environmentalists form an unexpected alliance to defend their land and water from the powerful Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
CAAMFest, the nation s largest festival of Asian American and Asian film, food, and music presents a dynamic program from May 13 to 23. The festival will feature virtual screenings, panels and performances, as well as an opening weekend with drive-in programs at Fort Mason Flix.
Following in last year s footsteps, CAAMFest, taking place during Asian Pacific American Heritage month, will showcase its diverse innovative program virtually, celebrating the Asian American community in a year rocked by the pandemic and anti-Asian racial discrimination. The violent attacks and hateful rhetoric have made the past year difficult for the Asian American community, says Stephen Gong, executive director of CAAM, making it essential that we continue to produce CAAMFest as a place to come together around stories that show the breadth of the Asian American experience and our interconnectedness with other communities.
