State labor department addresses Marylanders receiving unemployment overpayment notices

It was part of a conversation involving a review of $170 million worth of contracts to address the backlog of claims.Some people collecting unemployment benefits are now getting notices from the state that they were paid too much. According to state Comptroller Peter Franchot, the amounts are as high as $9,000. “It is very disconcerting to people when they get a 7-8-$9,000 overpayment demand and they obviously don t have it,” Franchot said.The issue came up during the Board of Public Works meeting as the panel dissected $170 million in contracts the Maryland Department of Labor awarded to address a backlog of claims and other unemployment benefit-related issues.“We are communicating directly with our customers about these overpayments,” Maryland Departmen
