Press-Republican SARANAC Saranac Town Clerk Mary L. Bell, 54, is accused of falsifying records and faces multiple felony counts. State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie announced the Redford woman was arrested Thursday for allegedly hiding her failure to deposit more than $800 in cash payments to the town that she had collected as clerk between April and August 2017. “Ms. Bell, as an elected official, swore to act with honesty and integrity,” DiNapoli said in a statement. “Instead, she took advantage of her position to manipulate the town’s records to cover for missing cash she was supposed to deposit.

Apr 30, 2021 The Clerk of the Town of Saranac was arrested for falsifying town records and not depositing over $800 of town funds.
Mary L. Bell was arrested following an investigation by the state comptroller s office, the Clinton County district attorney s office, and the county sheriff s department.
Bell is accused of collecting $1,203 of cash for town fees but only depositing $392. Bell is accused of substituting funds leftover in a dormant town clerk s bank account to make up for the missing $811. All of her alleged actions took place between April and August 2017.
The state comptroller s office discovered the false records during a routine examination of town records.
