City council adopts 2021 budget

New Castle City Hall FILE | NEWS City residents can expect no property tax increase next year due to the passage of New Castle’s 2021 budget Wednesday. New Castle City Council held four budget workshops this month to dissect Mayor Chris Frye’s proposed budget line by line. During a meeting Wednesday, the council proposed over 80 line item amendments including reinstating raises for both the police and fire chiefs, giving two percent raises to non-union employees and increasing city paving to over $630,000. “I think everybody in this process is worn out, but I’m happy to see that there has been some comprising,” said Councilwoman MaryAnne Gavrile. “I look forward to the next year, and I appreciate my colleagues on council and the chief financial officer and Mayor Frye for all the hard work that was done on the budget.”

New Castle seal With an estimated $15.5 million budget, New Castle city council spent Thursday cutting costs across multiple departments, including the police. City council spent its second 2021 budget workshop Thursday evaluating line items in the police, fire and public works departments portion of next year’s budget. Mayor Chris Frye and chief financial officer Stephanie Dean compiled the 100-page document and Frye introduced it to city council on Nov. 24. It (budget) has been very time consuming and very difficult, said councilwoman MaryAnne Gavrile. Not everybody s going to be happy with the budget, including myself, but know that we re working diligently. We don t want to raise taxes.
