A Des Moines landlord must pay $50,000 for discouraging potential tenants from housing options based on their religion and national origin, an illegal practice known as steering, a Polk County jury found.
The Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission sued Patrick Knueven in 2018, after the city department worked for years to try to establish a pattern of housing discrimination, including steering and over-pricing units based on potential tenants religion and national origin.
A jury on Thursday found him guilty of steering. It found him not guilty of charging higher rents, court documents said. The suit also named Mary Knueven, but the jury found her not guilty on both charges.
