Bremner prepares to serve as Glacier County s first woman commissioner MARY JO BREMNER and last updated 2020-12-31 21:22:27-05 A Browning woman is making history after being elected as the first woman to serve on the Glacier County Commission. Mary Jo Bremner, who ran as an independent, was elected in November to replace Tom McKay. Bremner taught at Browning High School for 30 years — she taught for so long that many of the Glacier County officials she’ll be working with are former students of hers. After teaching, she moved to the Montana Board of Public Education for seven years. Bremner came out of retirement to run for the commission seat, which ended in a historic win. She’ll be the first woman, and Native American woman, to hold the position. she said she’ll prrioritize budgeting and infrastructure in her first term, and as a Native American, she wants to help bridge the divide between county and tribal governments.

Bremner sworn in as first woman to fill Commissioner seat

Mary Jo Bremner made history on Monday, Dec. 21. She is not only the first woman Glacier County Commissioner. She is also the first Native American woman to hold the position. Outgoing commissioner Tom McKay administered the oath of office to Bremner, who gave McKay a fist-bump thanking him for his six years of service.  Also sworn in Monday was Janine Scott after being elected to another four-year term as Glacier County Clerk of Court in last month’s General Election. Scott, a Democrat, was unopposed.

When Mary Jo Bremner announced she was running for Glacier County Commissioner, she said her friends thought she was crazy. Glacier County had never had a female commissioner, let alone a Native American woman, or a commissioner who ran as an Independent. But Bremner defied the odds and was sworn in at a historic ceremony on Monday. I was humbled about the whole thing, Bremner said.  I feel very honored. Bremner, 68, left retirement to join the commission in hopes she would bring unity to a divided county.
