Artificial Intelligence Powered Microscope Checks Tumor Margins In Minutes by Pooja Shete on December 22, 2020 at 8:23 PM
One of the first questions the surgeons have after the removal of cancerous tissue is Did they get it all? The researchers have created a new microscope that can inexpensively and quickly image large tissue sections during the surgery to answer the question.
The research conducted by Rice University and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is published in the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Using the microscope, the surgeons can rapidly image relatively thick pieces of tissue with cellular resolution allowing them to inspect the margins of tumors immediately after its removal.
