BOAT owners are avoiding Tullamore because of domestic waste and sediment in the Grand Canal, a local councillor has claimed.
Cllr Ken Smollen said boat owners were afraid their propellers would be damaged due to the canal s condition.
Speaking at last week s meeting of Tullamore Municipal District, Cllr Smollen called on Offaly County Council to engage with Waterways Ireland on the issue.
“We need all the tourists we can get,” he stressed.
Senior Engineer, Mary Hussey of the council s Environment and Water Section, said the body would talk to Waterways about the condition of the canal through the town.

COUNCIL litter wardens are to launch patrols on the Grand Canal Greenway in Tullamore on Saturdays in a bid to stamp out the growing problem of dog fouling.
Senior Engineer with Offaly County Council, Mary Hussey has revealed that focussed patrolling is being introduced in areas around the town which are badly affected by the problem.
She was speaking at this month s meeting of Tullamore Municipal District after the issue had been again highlighted by councillors.
Ms Hussey said dog fouling had become an issue during the lockdown with people confined to a five kilometre radius of their homes.
