People are worried that the service will become more centralised. );   ); A number of local Councillors are worried that the running of Offaly s water and sewage system will become more centralised. Mary Hussey of the environment section of Offaly County Council told the April meeting of Birr Municipal District that a service level agreement has been in place between Irish Water and the local authority since 2014 whereby Irish Water is in charge of the county s water and sewage services but it extensively uses the local knowledge and hardworking approach of the local authority s outdoor staff.

Disgusting sewage problem in Offaly housing estate Reporter:   ); The problem of a disgusting sewage problem in an Offaly housing estate was raised during last week s meeting of Birr Municipal District. Cllr Clare Claffey told the zoom meeting that there s a serious problem with sewage discharge in Portavolla housing estate in Banagher. The councillor said this is an old problem and it s disgusting . She said the responsibility for dealing with the issue is kicked between Irish Water and the County Council with neither organisation taking it on board. “When we complain to Irish Water they say it is a Council problem. When we approach the Council they say it is Irish Water who should be dealing with it.”

CCTV introduced in Offaly cemetery due to awful dumping Reporter: );   ); Illegal dumping in our cemeteries is a significant problem at the moment and councillors have condemned it as being “awful” and betraying “a narrow mindset”. Cllr John Leahy told last week s meeting of Birr Municipal District that CCTV cameras will have to be introduced in some graveyards to tackle the problem. “It s been very upsetting to hear about the rubbish dumping in local graveyards over recent weeks,” he said. Mary Hussey, of the Environment section in the County Council, told the Councillors that Area Engineer John Mitchell is working on installing CCTV cameras in Clonoghill cemetery in Birr, where there have been a lot of complaints in recent weeks. Cllr Leahy said all the councillors would be very happy to hear that because it has been a big issue and the councillors have been getting a lot of complaints from the public.
