South Dakota received its first allocation of Pfizerâs COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, allowing immunizations to begin for health care workers in Sioux Falls and Rapid City. According to data from the State Department of Health, 405 vaccinations have been given to 405 individuals in the state as of Wednesday.
Pierre, however, will have to wait another week or so before it gets any shipments of its own.
While Avera St. Maryâs hospital in Pierre has not received a vaccine allocation yet, the first Hughes County resident has been vaccinated. According to Daniel Bucheli, communications director for the Department of Health, the Hughes County resident is an employee at Sanford USD Hospital. In nearby Sully County, one county resident who works at Monument Health in Rapid City has also been vaccinated.
