Woman attempted to smuggle tablets into Laois prison

A woman who attemppted to smuggle tablets into the Midlands Prison Portlaoise had her case adjourned at Portlaoise district court last week.
Justina Bugyte, 25, of Rearymore, Rosenallis was charged with conveying an article into the Midlands Prison on February 15, 2020
Sgt JJ Kirby outlined that during a search at the Midlands Prison on the date in question a large volume of tablets had been found.
Ms Bugyte was fully co-operative.
The tablets were not controlled drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
She had been visiting her ex partner.
Defence Counsel Suzanne Dooner said that Ms Bugyte’s ex partner was the father of her two children. She had been under pressure to bring an item into the prison.
Suspended sentence for Laois man who drove while disqualified

A suspended prison sentence was handed down to a man who drove whilst disqualifed at Portlaoise district court last Thursday. Sergei Parsin, 37, of 24 Rathmoyle, Abbeyleix was charged with no insurance and no driving licence at the Dublin Road, Portlaoise on April 3 this year.
The court heard he was a disqualified driver.
Defence solicitor, Josephine Fitzpatrick said that Mr Parsin had taken a short journey. He knew he should not have taken it but he had an errand to run and no one to take him.
He works locally and was seeking one final chance from the court.
Quantity of drugs found on Laois man a concern to Judge

The quantity of drugs a man had in his possession was of some concern to a Judge at Portlaoise district court last week.
Liam Gavin, 27, of 42 Buttercup Avenue, Esker Hills, Portlaoise was charged with possession of cannabis herb at Portlaoise Garda Station on March 3, 2021.
Defence solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said that Mr Gavin worked in construction.
He was in receipt of the Covid payment and his mood deteriorated and he slipped and started using.
He had engaged with CADS in Portlaoise.
Sgt JJ Kirby told the court the amount of cannabis was valued at €180. The sergeant agreed that Mr Gavin seemed to have straightened out his life.
Man acted as go between in attempted drugs exchange in Laois town

A Ballylinan man acted as a “go between” in a drugs deal, Portlaise district court heard last Thursday.
Gavin LaCumbre, 23, of 1 The Crescent, Ballylinan was charged with possession and possession for sale or supply at the Killeshin Hotel on March 7, 2020.
He pleaded guilty to both charges.
Sgt JJ Kirby told the court that on the date in question at the Killeshin Hotel Mr Lacumbre had been searched. Cocaine to the value of €1,960 and a small quantity of cannabis to the value of €600 had been found upon him.
