Television thrillers are complex by definition. They have to keep the audience engaged and do so by dazzling them with twists, drama, and shocking revelations that speak to the darkness at the heart of their characters. There is a line, however, and once that line is crossed, those twists, that drama, and the aforementioned darkness become suffocatingly confusing. At that point, the show becomes less of a thriller and more of a pessimistic tableau of all the awful things humanity is capable of, which bogs the show down and dissevers it from its value as entertainment.

When the coronavirus pandemic forced schools across the country to close last spring, many district leaders were gripped with anxiety because their teachers weren’t ready to pivot to remote learning.
But not Panama-Buena Vista Union, a K-8 district of about 18,000 students in Bakersfield, Calif., in the Central Valley, about 155 miles north of Los Angeles.
And not Jason Hodgson, the school system’s director of professional development, who had spent the last two years laying the groundwork for that moment even though he didn’t know it at the time.
Lily Rabe as Emma Hall
Lily Rabe is best known for her multiple roles on the FX anthology horror series American Horror Story and her lead role as Claire Bennigan on the ABC science fiction series The Whispers . Rabe is also known for her film roles in Miss Stevens (2016), No Reservations (2007) and Fractured (2019). Lily, who is also a producer, has another talent.
She studied dance for 10 years and was teaching ballet at a summer arts program in Connecticut when she was approached by the program s acting instructor, who asked her to perform a monologue in the final production. That s how the acting bug bit. Performing was clearly in the blood, with mother Jill Clayburgh an actor and her father David Rabe a playwright.

Plot
The official synopsis reads: “The series revolves around three characters, each with a difficult and mysterious past: Emma (Lily Rabe) is a young woman who once looked into the eyes of a dangerous killer, John (Hamish Linklater) is a former serial predator desperate to find redemption and Mary (Amy Brenneman) is a grieving mother obsessed with finding her missing daughter, Theresa (Stella Baker). As each of them is pushed to the edge, the truth about their pasts and motives grows ever murkier, blurring the lines between victim and perpetrator.”
