Aerial surveillance spots 89 North Atlantic right whales in Cape Cod Bay

PROVINCETOWN A banner day occurred March 21 for the Center for Coastal Studies flight crew over Cape Cod Bay with the most North Atlantic right whales documented in one day so far this spring, according to the center s Facebook post. Two new mom-and-calf pairs were documented in the bay, adding to the one pair seen earlier in the month. The center documents the presence of the critically endangered right whales in and around the bay to provide surveillance data to state marine fisheries authorities. Those authorities, in turn, oversee when the seasonal ban on commercial and recreation trap and pot fishing can be lifted. Typically, the right whales migrate out of Cape Cod Bay by early May, and commercial lobster fishermen are then given state permission to begin their fishing season.
