In your latest book the dog i saw you quoted in an interview that you dont have home turf, so you have no choice but to serve on these postnational currency. You have both spent your entire career, in some sense, talking about this. But could you each talk very briefly about being an immigrant or displaced expatriate and how that informed your writing . We will start with gary. Gary when i came to america, it was 1980 and being a russian was the worst thing you could be. There were all of these movies red drawn everything was red. I had eight years of hubris for a crime i did not commit. When i sentenced there, it was so wrong being a russian that i had to attend that i was born in east berlin, not leningrad. It was me convincing germ me convincing jewish kids that i was a german. [laughter] but 10 years later i showed up as oberlin college, a small Marxist College in chicago. [laughte
