I want to president ial history because the presidency and especially the one who it was it bill sora, who everyone pressured into it. Its really important that everyone understands him in the presidency. But i think the biographies are alienating those in the way that they their visual presentations, there title some of the way they are written. So i really wanted it the reader to be like that if they have never read a president ial biography, they had everything that they needed at the beginning of the book and then at the beginning of the section come to equip them to feel they are ready the experts. Richard norton smith, why did you call your book that you wrote 35 years ago uncommon man . Well, its taken, actually, from the title of a relatively famous hoover speech about the uncommon man. Remember, Vice President henry wallace, who was the second of fdrs Vice President s, gave a famous speech in 1942, i believe, maybe43, about the century of the common man. And wallace, from a left of center perspective, was projecting, in effect, the goals and ambitions of the generation that was fighting world war ii. And it wasnt enough simply to defeat the nazis, but to create at home a true democracy. A place where the common man would finally come into his own. And hoover approached this from a different place on the political spectrum. He was, in effect, making the case for what we might call a meritocracy. But something to say, that i shouldnt paraphrase it, but, you know, when you get sick, you want an uncommonly skillful doctor. When we go to war, we want an uncommonly able general. Yo

Politically, militarily. Country, ourhis views on gender and racial equality are shaped by the experiences in world war ii. There were black americans, hundreds of thousands of them, who served in the war mostly in allblack units. It was a segregated military. Many of them had a double v campaign. Victory against fascist opponents overseas and victory against racism at home. And the dignity, the empowerment, the sense of service, the sense of cohesion that that experience brought to black america was a propulsion system for the Civil Rights Movement after the war. The same for gender equality. We had 19 million american women working outside of the home during world war ii. Many of them went back to the homemakers after the war. But you dont put that genie back in the model for long. It showed women that they had an opportunity to do whatever men could do, that they could do things that men could do as well, if not better.
