The five-story annex of the Bethlehem Steel General Office building was last used as a temporary school when mold at Freemansburg Elementary displaced students in 2000.
Today, visitors to the 120,000-square-foot building at East Third Street and Founder’s Way must don respirators and protective gear to visit the mold-and asbestos-riddled building that once housed Bethlehem Steel mainframe computers.
Local developer Michael Perrucci, who owns it and the adjacent 13-story general office building, sees the smaller annex as the perfect way to launch a phased redevelopment of the site. But first he must environmentally clean-up the annex he hopes to renovate into modern offices.

Construction on the redevelopment of Martin Tower could be underway by the end of 2021, the site’s owner told the Bethlehem Planning Commission on Thursday evening.
The developers are asking the city to tweak the zoning rules governing the redevelopment of the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. world headquarters to allow for more parking near proposed medical buildings, the addition of a new Eighth Avenue entrance and a slightly denser development.
The commission voted unanimously to recommend Bethlehem City Council endorse all three changes, despite the city planning department’s advice to reject the request to allow more parking in front of the buildings. City council is set to hold an April 20 public hearing on the matter.
