WATCH: Hundreds of Capetonians gather in protest of Israeli violence against Palestine Share Cape Town - Hundreds of people across religious and racial lines donned the keffiyeh, symbolic of Palestinian resistance and solidarity, and waved Palestinian flags during a demonstration at the gates of Parliament in the CBD on Tuesday. The demonstration, which drew between close to 1 000 people, was organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign Cape Town (PSC-Cape Town) and supported by several political parties, and religious and solidarity groups. A large number of the protesters in Cape Town were Muslim who endured the heat, while currently fasting for the holy month of Ramadaan, to show their support for Palestine.

Hundreds of Palestinians were left wounded on Monday, as Israeli forces stormed Masjid al Aqsa in Jerusalem. Rubber bullets, tear gas and sound bombs were used on worshippers on the grounds. “It is a protest demonstration for supporters of Palestine’s liberation to express ourselves against what’s currently happening in Jerusalem and the broader issues of ending Zionism and the genocide of the Palestinian people,” said PSC-Cape Town chairperson, Martin Jansen.

Hundreds march to Parliament to protest against Israeli

About 300 people marched to Parliament on Tuesday afternoon to protest against the recent deadly Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip. Chanting “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great), the protesters waved Palestinian flags. Some protesters wore T-shirts with “Free Gaza, free Palestine”, and carried placards that read: “Stop Israel genocide of Palestine” and “Zionism – a menace to peace”. Riaaz Khan said he joined the protest because of the “atrocities being perpetrated” in Palestine. “Innocent women and young children are being killed by the Israeli government and the occupiers of Gaza,” he said. “They [the South Africa government] must take our message out to the global community,” he said.

The government met with trade unions on Tuesday after public sector wage negotiations failed two weeks ago. According to Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council rules, after 42 days of talks, either party may declare a dispute. That period ends today. Union leaders last week said they intend to declare a dispute, which could lead to a strike. The government is offering no salary hikes this year while unions demand 7%.
