Northern buyers set to remain a big factor in southern beef trade, say mart managers

Factory and wholesale beef buyers from Northern Ireland will continue to be a significant presence in the southern mart trade during 2021. That’s the verdict from mart managers, who are reporting strong demand from the North in recent weeks. Maurice Brosnan, manager of Gortatlea Mart in Co Kerry, said trade to the North had started “very brightly” this year and Northern buyers are continuing to “put it up to their southern counterparts for both cows and heifers”. Stephen Hannon of the Aurivio Mart Group said: “When it comes to better cattle, theirs is the only trade that creates real competition.

Fairy Garden burnt in illicit midnight party

Late night revellers in Macroom have left a trail of destruction in their wake following a midnight party in the town s Fairy Garden recently. Not content with contravening the COVID guidelines to restrict gatherings in order to counter the spread of the virus, louts lit a fire which burnt part of the picnic table at the site near he town centre, causing a considerable amount of damage. Municipal District Mayor and long time Tidy Towns activist, Martin Coughlan, told The Corkman that damage estimated at €700 had been caused by the late night bonfire. It s unfortunate that these things happen given that the Fairy Garden was an oasis within a few minutes walk of the town centre.
