HOTELIERS in York are celebrating the return of indoor hospitality with a heartfelt plea for guests to avoid last-minute cancellations. The Hospitality Association York (HAY) is warning of a digital timebomb as the online trend continues, with people stacking their bookings for both accommodation and tables and then deciding at the eleventh hour which one to keep. Hospitality leaders in the city say this is causing a major headache for many businesses who are just starting to get back on their feet.

York leaders plea for more help for city s pubs, shops and hotels

TEN thousand York jobs and hundreds of businesses are at immediate risk of being lost unless the Government provides more support to the hospitality and retail sectors, city leaders have warned in an open letter to the Chancellor. The letter warning of the dangers posed by the pandemic and lockdown to hotels, pubs, shops, restaurants and other leisure venues has been sent by key business leaders and organisations, including Greg Dyke, Chair of Make It York, council leader Keith Aspden, David Kerfoot, Chairman of York and North Yorkshire LEP, Carolyn Frank, Development Manager for Federation of Small Businesses North Yorkshire and Andrew Lowson, Executive Director, York Business Improvement District.

Council chiefs agree bailout for cash-strapped Make It York

Phil Pinder and Sean Bullick THE council has agreed to bail out tourism body Make It York - despite several business leaders urging the local authority to rethink the plans. Make It York (MIY) has a more than £1 million shortfall this year as its income from the Christmas market, Visit York information centre and Shambles Market have all been hit by the pandemic. The organisation, which was set up by City of York Council, said without financial support from the council it will close. It has successfully asked for a loan of up to £300,000 from the council, a letter of guarantee that the council will put up to £1 million towards the organisation during the next two years and for its annual cash payment back to the council to be scrapped this year.
