On the morning of 1 July last year, while sitting in my apartment in the Sydney suburb of Balmain, I got the phone call I had dreaded since I moved to Australia. My dad was dying. My sister had just been to visit him in hospital in Jersey and had been told the doctors had discovered an untreatable aneurysm.
