Newbury Planning Board resumes subdivision discussion Jan 20

By Jennifer Solis Correspondent Dec 29, 2020 NEWBURY – The Planning Board is slated to resume its discussion of a proposed 10-unit subdivision on High Road early in the New Year. Planners agreed this month to continue until Jan. 20 a public hearing on an Open Space Residential Design (OSRD) application known as Surrey Lane, located off 105 High Road. The virtual hearing will open at 7:15 p.m. and can be accessed through the Planning Board agenda on the town’s website, townofnewbury.org. It was clear when the hearing opened earlier this month that several board members were uncomfortable with the yield plan that developer Mark DiPiero has relied on for his design. The yield plan designates the number of units a developer could build in a conventional subdivision where no zoning waivers are requested.

Nonprofit finds new Jamaica Estates home

An all-male nonprofit is operating across the street from an all-girls high school. In July, Reconnect NYC moved from its Bedford-Stuyvesant home to the Bishop Molloy Retreat House at 86-45 Edgerton Blvd., directly across the street from The Mary Louis Academy. The house, attached to the Immaculate Conception Church, has been under renovation since the group moved in, slowing down operations, but a Reconnect NYC representative alerted Community Board 8 Dec. 9 that its graphic design workshop is up and running. The nonprofit provides employment and engages young men between the ages of 17 and 24, particularly those at risk of violence and under-education.
