Volta, Scale AI launch program to help supply chain startups scale Five Atlantic Canadian companies will gain access to funding and consulting resources to develop artificial intelligence (AI) supply-chain technology through a new program, Volta AI, funded by Canadian supercluster Scale AI. Delivered by Halifax innovation hub Volta, the year-long program will offer participating companies up to $14,000 to help them develop AI products. Participants will also attend workshops and have access to AI experts and investors. The aim is to raise the profile of AI in Atlantic Canada and encourage more entrepreneurs to consider the region. Volta CEO Martha Casey said the program’s success will be evaluated primarily based on growth goals set in a consultative process with participants.

Applications open for Volta pitch competition Applications for Volta’s eighth pitch competition are open for early-stage Atlantic Canada-based tech startups until March 29. The Halifax-based innovation hub’s semi-annual pitch competition acts as an intake for its one-year cohort program, Volta Cohort, which aims to foster entrepreneurial talent and support innovative startups in Atlantic Canada with the potential to scale. On May 19, 15 finalists will compete for a $25,000 investment and entry to Volta’s one-year program. Fifteen finalists will present their three-minute pitches to a panel of judges at the virtual May 19 pitch competition for the chance to earn a $25,000 convertible note investment and admittance to Volta Cohort, which provides startups with investment, mentorship, and other resources. Eligible startups must not have closed a financing round yet.

Volta, Black Business Initiative, Ulnooweg team up to support Black and Indigenous entrepreneurs in Atlantic Canada Innovation hub Volta, the Black Business Initiative (BBI), and Indigenous business lender Ulnooweg have joined forces to provide workshops and skills development training to underrepresented entrepreneurs in Atlantic Canada. Applications for the new program are due February 21. The 16-week-long Boost program, which is backed by the federally funded Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and sponsored by RBC, launches in mid-March. Volta, BBI and Ulnooweg plan to accept five to 10 individuals, all of whom must be based in Atlantic Canada. Applications for the new program are due February 21.
