i ll hopefully pronouce this correctly but a quaits club in richmond, which was essentially a barbecue club for gentlemen. and john marshall was one of the founding members. and the coits club had their own punch and madeira was one of the primary ingredients along with cognac, rum and sugar and mints thrown in for fun, i think, but madeira was one of the primary ingredients. coits was a long game at the time, kind of akin to horse shoes and they would throw these iron rings at megs. and one of the reasons they got together was to have this bond. and supposedly, john marshall was vigorous in enforcing his laws that politics and religion was not to be discussed. and if anyone was caught discussing those, they were fined a case of champagne, which would then be consumed at the next meeting. and apparently, he had bottles labeled the supreme court to bring to the boarding house to share? i think there were others that played on their fondness for madeira. and yes, there
