Meet Neil Kendricks: Longtime filmmaker and artist gets his due with two new exhibitions

Print No one is particularly good at describing art. It’s like recounting a dream. Sure, its vividness and impressions feel alive within us, but explaining it to another person can often make us sound insane. Such is the case with the art of Neil Kendricks. It’s unlikely anyone would fully classify his work as surrealistic in nature the dream-like nature of a few of his short films notwithstanding but there is sense of ineffability when examining the length and breadth of his three-decade career. At once a filmmaker and draftsman, painter and graphic novelist, his mercurial career is not easily encapsulated in a story, much less a paragraph.

Column: Celebrate National Poetry Month with San Diego poets, a rebel Dickinson and free online workshops

Print Maybe it was Amanda Gorman’s stirring inauguration poem, “The Hill We Climb.” Maybe it’s the need to do something besides climbing the same mountain, all day, every day. Or maybe it’s the arrival of spring and the desire to give yourself an emotional refresh. Whatever the reason, if you are aching for a literary shot in the arm, National Poetry Month is here for you and your weary synapses. From free online workshops to a decidedly unbound Emily Dickinson, here are some cultural and community resources to help you find the right words for this weird time.

A snapshot of the Medium Festival of Photography

Print In a world of social media and ever-changing Instagram filters, one could argue that photography has never been more important in our daily lives. For Scott B. Davis, however, the art of photography has always been of utmost importance. The local photographer, who often specialized in stark black-and-white images of the Southern California landscape, saw an opportunity to bring both amateur and professional photographers together to celebrate the medium and foster creativity. Thus, the Medium Festival of Photography was born. “I will always informally describe Medium to people that we follow the Comic-Con model in that it’s a national event that takes place in San Diego,” says Davis, the festival’s executive director. “Less than half of our attendees comes from San Diego, and the rest is from everywhere in the United States and even international.”
