BAR HARBOR — Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) has donated 3 acres of land off Route 3 near Northeast Creek to Island Housing Trust (IHT) for year-round workforce housing.
The initiative is driven by real estate values that have climbed sharply on Mount Desert Island, and access to year-round housing that is affordable has become increasingly challenging for many people who work on the island and earn an average income.
The land was donated to the Northeast Wilderness Trust, which said the 'Tidal Bends Wilderness Preserve' contains a freshwater tidal zone and a mature forest that appears to have not been logged for many decades.
