Somerville residents and elected officials are fed up: they’ve been fighting for safety improvements along McGrath Highway and Mystic Avenue for years, and after four pedestrian fatalities, they want immediate action from MassDOT.
On May 26, a couple hundred area residents rallied in 90-degree heat to draw attention to the state’s inaction regarding road safety and environmental justice along I-93. Updated: 10:09 AM EDT May 12, 2021 A man struck by an alleged hit-and-run driver in Somerville has died, his family confirmed Wednesday.Marshall Mac, 72, a grandfather and Vietnam War veteran who spent six years as a prisoner of war, was struck one month ago on the McGrath Highway near the intersection of Broadway. Mac was in a coma at Massachusetts General Hospital and died on April 29, according to a GoFundMe page set up by his family.The driver, who was only identified by authorities as a 64-year-old man from Somerville, turned himself into Somerville Police four days after the crash.State police said the driver of the vehicle did not stop after striking the pedestrian and fled the scene on Route 28 toward Cambridge. At the time of the crash, state police said based on the law and circumstances, the driver was summonsed with a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of a crash that caused with personal injury. More charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
