Pacific Forum Leaders Apologise to Micronesia After Leadership Split
The leaders of several Pacific island nations met to mend fences after Micronesia pulled out of the region’s peak body, the Pacific Island Forum (PIF), in February over the selection of its new secretary-general from the Cook Islands.
The political dialogue mechanism called the Forum Troika Plus was set up in March to facilitate open and frank discussions among the Pacific leaders following the split but Micronesian leaders have signalled that there is a way to go.
The leaders of Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, Nauru, Fiji, and Samoa offered apologies to Micronesia which in February gave a strong rebuke of the PIF for not selecting their consensus candidate Gerald Zackios, who serves as Marshall Islands’ Ambassador to the United States.
For two years, Micronesian leaders prepared for their long-awaited turn to lead the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).
When they met on the margins of the 2019 74th UN General Assembly, Micronesia’s upcoming decision to appoint a new PIF secretary-general was one of the most pressing subjects of discussion.

The selection of the PIF secretary-general is a consensus decision, and by longstanding agreement, PIF’s three sub-regions – Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia – take turns putting up a candidate.
Other candidates are sometimes nominated, but in the end, “consensus” has historically prevailed. In the last cycle, other candidates were withdrawn in favour of Dame Meg Taylor, the consensus candidate from Melanesia.

Majuro - In its first parliament session Friday following the vote for the new Pacific Islands Forum Secretary-General earlier this week, government and opposition MPs lined up to express unhappiness with the result. But no one advocated pulling out from the regional organization.

The operative word from most of the MPs who spoke Friday in Majuro was for the government to re-assess its relationship with the Forum following the defeat, by a 9-8 vote, of Marshall Islands Ambassador to the US, Gerald Zackios. He was endorsed by all five Micronesian area heads of state as the candidate for the sub-region.
