Recently, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed new service chiefs to pilot the affairs of the armed forces. The former service chiefs, namely the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-General Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Sadique Abubakar, had been widely criticized by Nigerians for their poor handling of the country’s multifaceted security challenges, but the president had consistently expressed satisfaction with their performance. He had shunned the ceaseless calls, including by members of the National Assembly, to let them go, particularly as they had stayed in office beyond their normal service years. The request was contained in a letter addressed to President of Senate, Ahmad Lawan, which was read at plenary yesterday. x
In the letter, Buhari said: “In accordance to section 171, sub-section 1, 2 C and Section 4 of 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, I have the honour to forward for confirmation by the Senate, the underlisted as non-career ambassadors designate.
“The non -career ambassadors designate include Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin (rtd) (Ekiti); Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai (rtd), (Borno); Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), Cross River); Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (rtd) Bauchi and Air Vice Marshal Mohammed S Usman (rtd) (Kano).”

The Senate on Tuesday received President Muhammadu Buhari’s request to confirm former Service Chiefs as non-career ambassador designates to Nigeria foreign missions.
Buhari’s request for a confirmation is contained in a letter addressed to President of Senate Ahmad Lawan and read at plenary.
Buhari in the letter said: ”in accordance to section 171, sub-section 1, 2 C and Section 4 of 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, I have the honour to forward for confirmation by the Senate, the underlisted as non-career ambassador designates. x
