Thibodaux city marshal awards two college scholarships
Thibodaux City Marshal Calvin Cooks presented $500 scholarship checks Monday to two local students.
Helena Bergeron, 17, is a senior at Thibodaux High School and is set to graduate Wednesday. The other scholarship recipient, Phoebe LeBouef, 19, is an e-learning student who graduated in January.
Both students plan on attending Nicholls State University in the fall.
LeBouef is majoring in health.
“It feels incredible,” she said. “I can’t believe I won a scholarship. It’s amazing.”
Bergeron is going study nutrition.
“It’s an honor to get this scholarship,” she said. “It feels amazing.”
Cooks, the first-ever Black candidate elected as Thibodaux’s city marshal, took office in late December. He retired from the Thibodaux Police Department after serving more than 30 years in law enforcement both with the department and Lafourche Sheriff’s Office.
Thibodaux city marshal offering two $500 college scholarships. Here s how to apply
Applications are being accepted for a scholarship program launched by Thibodaux City Marshal Calvin Cooks Sr.
The two $500 scholarships are available for graduating high school students who live in the Thibodaux area and are planning to attend Nicholls State University or Fletcher Technical Community College.
Applicants must be a permanent resident of Thibodaux and must be eligible for admission to the college listed on the application, officials said.
The scholarships will only be paid for full-time undergraduate attendance at Nicholls or Fletcher.
“The scholarship is a gift, not a loan, and is awarded to defray the rising costs of tuition and related expenses in higher education,” Cooks said. “There are no restrictions on the purposes for which the scholarship is spent.”
