Apart from the chairman of the commission, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, there are 12 national commissioners that run the administration of the electoral umpire.
Yakubu, whose first tenure ended on Monday, November 9, 2020, was re-appointed as the chairman of the commission for a record second term in office.
However, five national commissioners whose tenure expired and are not eligible for re-appointment were Mrs Amina Bala Zakari (Jigawa, North West) who had acted as INEC chairman before Yakubu took over Professor Antonia Taiye Okoosi-Simbine (Kogi, North-Central); Alhaji Baba Shettima Arfo (Borno, North-East); Dr Mohammed Mustafa Lecky (Edo, South-South) and Prince Adedeji Solomon Soyebi (Ogun, South-West).

The Independent National Electoral Commission will undertake an audit of its voter register ahead of the 2023 general elections, its chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has said.
Yakubu spoke at the INEC headquarters on Thursday after taking over from Air Vice Marshal Ahmed Muazu (retd.), who assumed the office in acting capacity.
According to the chairman, the commission had also concluded arrangements to introduce a new technology for voter enrolment in 2021.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu has assumed office as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second term.
Also, the INEC boss has listed his immediate priorities to include ensuring the passage of a new electoral law for Nigeria and the registration of voters in the first quarter of 2021.
Yakubu, who was first sworn in to office on November 9, 2015, was again sworn in for a second term on Wednesday by President Muhammadu Buhari, following his clearance by the Senate.
Speaking at a brief ceremony to formally take over the affairs of the commission, he pledged to discharge his responsibilities without bias.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu has resumed as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second term.
His resumption comes after his appointment was confirmed by the Senate and was on Wednesday sworn in by President Muhammadu Buhari before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
His appointment and confirmation make him the first chairman of the commission to run a second term in office since 1999.
