NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance rover takes first drive across Martian terrain

“When it comes to wheeled vehicles on other planets, there are few first-time events that measure up in significance to that of the first drive,” wrote Anais Zarifian, the craft’s mobility test bed engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “This was our first chance to ‘kick the tires’ and take Perseverance out for a spin. The rover’s six-wheel drive responded superbly. We are now confident our drive system is good to go, capable of taking us wherever the science leads us over the next two years.” Scroll near the 8-minute mark below for a first peek at the Martian ground that Perseverance already is leaving in its wake:

Life on Mars: Alien microbes could be lurking beneath Red Planet s surface, expert claims

Life on Mars: Perseverance will search for evidence of alien life in Jezero Crater (Image: NASA) READ MORE The Mars rover touched down on the planet this Thursday, February 18, after a six-and-a-half month journey through the vacuum of space. Perseverance touched down in Jezero Crater - an ancient basin once believed to have flowed with water - where it will analyse rock samples for chemical evidence of past life. According to Dr Natalia Zalewska, a planetologist at the Space Research Centre at the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), the NASA rover is the right tool for the job. She said: The rover will be equipped with instruments for the study of life, examining artefacts that come life that may have once been there or even smoulders under the surface.

NASA s rover touched down on Mars this Thursday, February 18, after a seven-month trip through space and an even more terrifying seven-minute descent through the planet s atmosphere. Perseverance s primary goal is to search for evidence of alien life from a time when Mars resembled a young Earth - about 4 billion years ago. But the rover will also test new technology that could one day help Mars colonists terraform the planet s environment to our advantage.
