The race for Mecklenburg County sheriff was one of the most intense contests in the Charlotte area on the May 17 primary. Incumbent Sheriff Garry McFadden, a Democrat, was challenged by two former sheriff's office employees, Gina Hicks and Marquis Robinson. Without a Republican primary, this effectively decides the race.
Statewide, races on the primary ballot include Congress, the North Carolina General Assembly, the state Supreme Court and the state Court of Appeals. Most counties around Charlotte also have Superior and District Court judges on the ballot.
The GOP U.S. Senate contest is the headliner in North Carolina's May 17 primary. But A number of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County races including for City Council, sheriff and district attorney will be decided Tuesday in the Democratic primary.
