Umoja Swahili for unity is one of the seven principles celebrated during Kwanzaa.
The event was held partially outside with a food truck and wine being distributed to guests. Only 12 people were allowed inside the gallery at a time to view the exhibit. Umoja: A Celebration of Black Artists is a collaboration between GFAA and the Alachua Community Remembrance Project, with the goal of strengthening relationships between the community and giving more recognition to Black artists.
The exhibit is open through June 19 and holds 39 pieces submitted by 20 artists.
Guests were treated to a talk from artist Keiaria Williams and spoken word poetry by Brandon McKay, who spoke on Black art and how Black narratives matter.
