The Timbers opened the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday with a thrilling back-and-forth draw in Honduras to C.D. Marathón that sets the stage for a tense return leg in Portland. With the 2-2 draw, a win for either side next week at Providence Park will determine the two-leg winner to advance to the Champions League quarterfinal round.
Diego Valeri pulled the Timbers ahead in the 59th minute off a gorgeous arching free kick off that bounced off the crossbar, off the Marathón goalkeeper Denovan Torres’ back and into goal. It would have been Valeri’s 97th career goal for the Timbers, but will officially be recorded as an own goal by Torres.
