Betty Kathleen Leaver Betty passed away peacefully at The Royal Star and Garter Home, High Wycombe on 2nd March aged 96. Loving wife of Les Brill and then of Rex and dearly loved mother of Marion and Stephen, mother-in-law of Chris, Gran to Kathryn and Hannah, Great Grannie to Matilda and stepmother to Su and Tony. Under Coronavirus restrictions a private funeral service will be held at St Michael and All Angels Church Hughenden on Wednesday 24th March by invitation only. To the world, his friends and in his work, David Gilkey was good-humored, loyal, brave, meticulous, at times a little manic, and deeply sensitive.
The late photojournalist documented natural disasters and wars by bringing his feet which he called the greatest zoom lens ever invented close into the lives of people.
As an NPR staff photographer, he enjoyed all the jokes about taking pictures for a radio network. Shooting stories around the world, he won numerous awards for capturing loss, struggle and even joy.
As he watched a war-torn Afghanistan change around him, he wrote in 2013, I photographed the little things I had stopped seeing.
Gilkey died in 2016 while on assignment in Afghanistan. His mother, Alyda Gilkey, remembers the man behind the lens: an adventurous soul who had a way of putting his subjects at ease.
