For the safety of vessels, their crew and cargo, the Marlborough Harbourmaster has issued a direction that sets a maximum length of 187 metres for any new vessels looking to use the Tory Channel/Kura Te Au, to access Marlborough ports at Picton and Shakespeare .

Work is underway to identify the controls, including the
operational and risk management practices that need to be in
place, to enable the ongoing safe transit of vessels through
Tory Channel and Queen Charlotte Sound, said Captain Luke
Grogan, the Marlborough Harbourmaster.
“A
collaborative risk assessment group was convened last year
which includes the ferry operators, Maritime New Zealand,
Port Marlborough and the Marlborough Harbourmaster. I also
commissioned external maritime risk consultants GBT
International (now TC South) to undertake a review of
maritime risk in Tory Channel, published as a report,

In what is believed to be a New Zealand-first, this Saturday morning Marlborough’s Harbourmaster will trial delivering safe boating messages by drone with a clip-on sound system. The ground (air) breaking project, being delivered in partnership with local radio station brian fm, has been funded by Maritime New Zealand.
