ND Tribe Must Handle Its Own Election Row, 8th Circ. Told
Law360 (May 12, 2021, 9:37 PM EDT) Council members for the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation have urged the Eighth Circuit not to revive a tribal member s challenge to an election rule, saying a district judge rightly found the federal courts have no say in resolving the dispute.
Tribe member Raymond Cross asked the circuit court in March to overturn a North Dakota federal judge s October decision tossing his suit over the tribe s requirement that members return to the tribe s reservation to vote in elections, claiming the rule violates the federal Indian Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian is celebrating Earth Day with a virtual Living Earth Festival running this Thursday through Sunday.
“We look at every day as Earth Day,” Assistant Director of Programs Shawn Termin told WTOP. “This is our 14th year to celebrate it. This year we’re focusing on the business of agriculture in Indian Country. We have been supported generously by the National American Agricultural Fund.”
The festival kicks off with an opening statement by golfer Notah Begay III (Navajo/San Felipe/Isleta), four-time PGA Tour champion, sportscaster and founder of the Notah Begay III Foundation, which provides health and wellness education to Native youth.
