The president of the United States [applause] thank you. Happy new year to you. Hello, everybody. Thank you. Everybody have a seat. Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the white house. I realize that the last thing you want to hear on new years eve is another speech from me. But i do need to talk about the progress being made in congress today. For the last few days, leaders of both parties are working toward an agreement that will prevent a middleclass tax hike from hitting 98 of all americans starting tomorrow. Preventing that tax hike has been my top priority. The last thing that folks like the folks appear on this stage can afford right now is to pay an extra 2,000 in taxes next year. Middleclass families cannot afford it, businesses cannot afford it, our economy cannot afford it. Today, it appears an agreement to prevent this new
Thank you. That was extremely helpful and, i think, a fantastic complement to what weve heard. Jan and i have negotiated. What we have decided to do is take one round of several questions, and then give the panel a chance to very briefly close, and then we hope we wont run too far over. There was right there. On the 8th of july 2009, the guardian published evidence of phone hacking on an industrial scale when coulson was editor of the news of the world. At that time coulson was his director of communications. What action did he take . As i said a moment ago, the assurances i sought and received were the same assurances received by the press complaints commission, by select committee of this house and by police investigations. They were also thoroughly gone into by the leff levison inquir. Specifically, he talks ab
