Pa. legislative leaders failed in their duty to select reapportionment chair By the Editorial Board / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette © Provided by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Pennsylvania’s legislative leaders, despite having dozens of interested candidates, failed once again to agree on appointing a chairman of the Legislative Reapportionment Commission the person tasked with casting tie-breaking votes on proposed district maps. The Legislature’s leaders talked of commitment to fairness and openness in the process, but in the end, the fact that they couldn’t agree shows that politics still control reapportionment. The four caucus leaders of the state House and Senate had weeks to decide on a chairman, and even opened the position for only the second time to applications from the public. With anti-gerrymandering organizations such as Fair Districts PA actively campaigning for more public input in the reapportionment process, this was the ideal time for caucus

Thursday, February 25, 2021 Share This year’s Community Engaged Scholarship Forum, titled “Progress through Partnerships: Advancing Community Resilience,” will bring Pitt students, faculty, staff and community members together with leaders in higher education and community development to discuss topics including basic needs, civic participation, digital access and inclusion, education, health equity, criminal justice reform, and relationships and the social fabric. Registration for the March 2 virtual event is open through Friday, Feb. 26. While programming runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, participants have the flexibility to choose to attend as many or as few sessions as they’d like and can come and go throughout the day and evening. Sessions are grouped around themes including relationships and our social fabric, critical and liberatory practices in community engagement, health equity and criminal justice reform.
