January 21, 2021 What I learnt walking Te Araroa for 50 days Having recently walked much of the South Island stretch of Te Araroa, Kirsten O’Regan reflects on the magnificent landscapes and interesting characters she encountered along the way. On our 36th day of walking, we climb through the fire-blackened hills above Ohau, stopping to examine heat-disfigured trail markers. Fresh green shoots have pushed through the sooty earth. Some matagouri bushes escaped significant damage; tiny pale-green flowers soften their spikes and perfume the breeze.

Thrifty partners with Te Araroa trail to keep walkers moving

Monday, 14 December, 2020 - 13:45 Car rental company Thrifty has stepped up to support New Zealand’s iconic national walking trail as part of a partnership with Te Araroa Trust. The partnership sees Thrifty come on board as the ‘Official Vehicle Partner’ for the Trust, providing transport and vehicle support that will help free up funds to maintain and improve the 3,000km route from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Te Araroa Trust executive director Mark Weatherall said the Trust was thrilled to have Thrifty’s support as it headed into the busy summer months when trail walking was particularly popular. Thrifty has helped Kiwis explore our beautiful country for many years and it’s fantastic to have them on board as a Gold Partner at a time when more New Zealanders than ever are lacing up their boots to explore sections of Te Araroa, he said.

Every single day, it s in my mind and in my heart - The epic tale of Te Araroa Trail

Robyn Edie/Stuff Bruce Hopkins, a Kiwi actor, spent nearly seven months walking Te Araroa Trail, completing the journey in May 2018. When another wind gust blew him off balance, a passing motorist pulled over and offered a lift. He accepted, and several kilometres later was dropped off just before Bluff, so he could walk through the town to its famous signpost by the ocean, marking the end of his long journey. He had no qualms about taking the ride, given the dangers on the road. “By the time I hauled my ass through the mountains, had my little cancer mass in my bladder, smashed my shin, ripped my knee in the Richmond Ranges, I thought, no, I am OK about that, I am OK to take the odd ride.”
